One Love; Cartier love Bracelets

The last five years have been awash with the passing trends. With another Spring comes another crop of florals, with Winter a faux shag waistcoat, but throughout the seasons one thing has remained the same; Cartier Love bracelets are so in.

The truth is that the love bracelet phenomenon isn’t a new one. They weren’t discovered by teen sensation Kylie Jenner in 2012, despite the rumours. They weren’t designed for Tom Cruise in 2006, so that he could congratulate his now ex-wife Katie Holmes on the birth of their baby girl, Suri.

No, the Love bracelets were actually created in 1969 by Italian designer, Aldo Cipullo, so why now are they seen effortlessly stacked in piles on the cool and trendy that were once but a twinkle in their parents eyes?

The idea behind the Love Bracelet was just that, love. Originally only twenty-five were created and given to couples as a sign of their everlasting love for one another, hence the ability to lock yourself into the bracelet to symbolise the locking of your heart to another.

The design for the bangles were said to mimic a chastity belt worn by women in medieval times. The belts were supposed to protect the woman’s virtue and good name and were locked, much like the bracelet, unable to be opened without the key.

The lock is no joke. It’s rumoured that in New York City, home to some of the world’s most glamorous, up to several hospitals carry a Cartier screwdriver to make sure they can free their patient in case of a medical emergency.

It’s not hard to see why the bangles have remained in the limelight. Their simple, yet flawless style, pair perfectly with any outfit and are ready for a night filled with glamour, for a coffee out with friends or even when grabbing a working lunch at the office.

As trends come and go, one thing’s for certain, these bracelets will continue their rightful reign over the rich and famous, and we certainly don’t blame them.
